That neighborhood gathering, it sort of got its start, you know, as a simple summer sidewalk sale. It’s pretty neat, really, to see how things grow from small beginnings.
As a matter of fact, when the weekend rolls around, there are just so many things to do, whether you're right in West Seattle or just nearby. You'll find plenty of suggestions for daytime and evening activities, and a lot of those ideas come from folks like you, sharing what's happening.
For instance, the folks in Highland Park, young and old, they actually got together and walked through their streets on New Year's Eve for their yearly get-together. It’s a pretty cool way to celebrate, I think. And speaking of helping out, someone has just opened up the only emergency spot for folks to stay in West Seattle for the chilly time of year. Cold weather means it’s open through the night for up to thirty people who just need somewhere warm to be.
We also hear about updates from local businesses, and there are often meetings with police and city representatives, like at the Southwest Precinct advisory group. These gatherings, you know, they really help keep everyone in the loop about what’s going on in West Seattle.
One of the biggest holiday celebrations on the whole peninsula is that Fourth of July kids’ parade. It’s a really fun time, now put on by the Admiral Neighborhood Association. It usually kicks off at ten in the morning on Friday from 44th Street. And just a heads-up, sometimes there are temporary closures for the West Seattle low bridge, so that’s something to keep in mind if you’re planning to get around.
